How to Transform Your Home with Curtains
March 19, 2017
First-time buyers of homes in LaGrange GA often don’t realize the number of design decisions that have to be made before you move into a new house. You’ll have to decide on items like paint colors, flooring, furniture, and lighting. One of the first design elements to consider is window treatments.
Curtains are probably the most popular window covering in a home. They help control the light, provide a measure of privacy and warmth, and add texture and color to a room. But there is a right way and a wrong way to hang curtains. Here are a few tips on how to enhance your home with curtains.
Go Wide – Pick out a curtain rod that is roughly 8”–12” wider than the width of your window. This is a clever way to trick your eye into thinking the window is much bigger than it really is. The exact width depends on how compact you want your curtains to hang. Make sure the curtain isn’t covering the window, but starts at the outer border of the window frame.
Go High – Many people make the mistake of hanging a curtain rod directly over their window. But the trick to making your windows appear tall is to place the curtain rod closer to the ceiling, generally about 4-6 inches above the window frame.
Be Generous with Fabric – Curtains should feel full, not skimpy in your room. If you plan to close the curtains occasionally, make sure the panels are between 2 and 2-1/2 times the window’s width. And don’t go too short with your curtains either, unless you’re using café-style panels. Your curtains can either puddle on the floor for a romantic feel, or stop less than an inch from the floor to keep them from dragging and getting dirty.
Match Fabric to Your Room – The curtain fabric you use should match the mood and function of the room. If you want to convey a casual feel and filter the light, choose a lighter blend of fabric. Denser fabrics like velvet lend a more formal air to a room and provide more privacy. Linen is a good choice for a breezier feel.
