Thanks to a railroad that was built in the mid 1800s, Smiths Station is now a great starting point for getting out and enjoying a variety of attractions and forms of entertainment. Within 45 minutes, you can be in numerous cities and even other states, not that there isn’t plenty to enjoy right in Smiths Station. So if you’re thinking of purchasing one of the homes in Smiths Station AL, such as in the ones in the Rocky Ridge community, you won’t be short of options when you want to get out and have fun.
Smiths Station is surrounded by Auburn, Opelika, and Columbus, Georgia, offering activities for all ages and just about all interests. There are a variety of museums that kids will enjoy as much as adults, historic sites to visit, and there’s always fishing!
Kids may put up a fuss about historic sites and museums, but usually when they get there, they find plenty of things to keep them interested and there’s no shortage of locations to help kids learn about history, science, and more while also letting them get hands-on at times. For example, the Coca-Cola Space Science Center in Columbus, about 9 miles southeast of Smiths Station, has a lot of interactive exhibits and a learning center. Kids and adults alike will enjoy learning more about space, getting a closer look at the stars thanks to the observatory, and kids can imagine themselves as astronauts on a mission to Mars.
For a more grounded outing, take in the Wild Animal Safari in Pine Mountain, Georgia, which is about 35 miles north of Smiths Station. Here, you can take a drive through 250 acres and possibly see up to 65 species of animals. Among those you may encounter are everything from bison to wildebeests!
Pine Mountain has plenty of other options, with a wealth of activities all at Callaway Gardens. First, to keep with the animal theme, you’ll find the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center. Named for a philanthropist and the founder of Days Inn, the butterfly center is North America’s largest glass-enclosed tropical conservatory with hundreds of beautiful butterflies.
If you’re looking for more active entertainment, Callaway Gardens has plenty on offer. There are two 18-hole golf courses there: the Lake View Course, and the Mountain View Course. If you’re looking for something to get the adrenaline going, Callaway Gardens also has a zipline through the trees and a challenging rope course.
Art and history lovers will find plenty to enjoy in and around the Smiths Station area. In Auburn, which is just 25 miles west of Smiths Station, you’ll find the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Arts. This museum houses a permanent collection of more than 1,500 pieces giving you plenty of reasons to make multiple visits. You’ll see art ranging from Irish sculptures to one of the region’s largest collections of James Audubon prints.
If you head to Tuskegee, AL, you’ll find a great place to learn about the state’s history. The Tuskegee Human and Civil Rights Multicultural Center starts with Alabama’s first settlers. There are also permanent exhibits that show the roles played by Native Americans, African-Americans, and Europeans in the state’s past. Following a similar history theme, you should also visit Loachapoka’s Historic District, which is included in the National Register of Historic Places. A self-guided tour will let you take in the historic district, including the old general store that was built in 1856. The store is now the Lee County Historical Society Museum.
Of course, some days you just want to take it easy. The Sandy Point Recreation Area is a nice place to while away the day and if you’re interested in fishing, the recreation area in Harrish, Georgia, includes Goat Rock Lake, where you can find bass, catfish and crappie. Another option is Lee County Public Fishing Lake in Opelika. Take your rod and reel and you may go home with some bass, bluegill, shellcracker or catfish. For convenience, boat rentals and bait are available on site. Just be aware of fishing license laws, as a valid Alabama fishing license is required to fish on any public waterways in the state.
This is just a brief look at all that there is to do around Smiths Station. A relatively short drive – 30 minutes to an hour at most – will get you to a variety of locations for a fun day out, no matter your interests or age. So consider one of the homes in Smiths Station AL, especially our new homes at Rocky Ridge community, and you’ll be ideally located to get out and enjoy life.Tags: homes in smith station al, new homes in smith station alabama, new homes in smiths alabama
