Selling Your Home? Stay Organized with These Tips!
September 11, 2022
You’ll find that just about all Columbus GA Realtors will recommend streamlining your home when you put it on the market. That means getting rid of clutter and getting organized. It’s likely to be for just a short while in today’s seller’s market, but now is the time to limit the number of items on view and let the rooms speak for themselves. Once this is done, it’s important to follow through and keep the space organized so you’re not rushing around right before a sudden showing.
Since you’re going to be moving anyway, now is a good time to go through all of your items and get rid of anything you really don’t want or need anymore. This way there is less to pack, move, and unpack. Donate items that are still in good shape, scan documents that you want to keep, but don’t need the physical copy, and if you still have a bunch of CDs, buy folders specifically made to hold CDs and their covers, so you can get rid of all of the jewel cases. What used to take up tons of space now fits easily in a section of a bookcase. If you have a hard time knowing where to start or making decisions, it’s worth it to hire a professional to come in and help. You probably have stuff you really don’t need any longer and they can help you finally get rid of it all.
With fewer unnecessary items, you can start doing some packing of personal photos, knicknacks, and other items you won’t need right now. This gives you a head start on your packing and makes your home look more spacious. Just make sure to neatly store the boxes, preferably in the garage. If your agent recommends storing excess furniture, you may want to look into off-site storage until you move.
Designers typically recommend that you only have three items or less on counters, table tops, etc. If you have and need more items, especially for a coffee table, look into decorative storage boxes that can easily hide any jumble of remotes and game gear, while also making it easy to find these items if you always put them back when finished. It’s a good habit to get into, whether you’re selling or not.
In fact, stylish storage is a great way to keep items organized without looking cluttered and can help you find things faster. Woven or fabric-covered boxes on shelves and bookcases are great for storing a variety of items. Also consider plastic bins for under the bed to hold out-of-season clothing. There are even furniture pieces, such as ottomans, that offer comfort and storage if they have lids that open to store throw pillows, blankets, toys, and more. Attractive storage for your kitchen not only keeps things cleaner, but also helps you better gauge when you need more of something. Keep some things you use daily on the countertops, but store away anything you don’t use daily, if at all possible.
By getting organized, purging what you don’t need, and packing up things you can live without until you move, your home will look bigger and neater to potential buyers, adding to your home’s appeal and hopefully the amount you get for it!
