Opelika Gets New Ridesharing Help from Lyft

Residents of homes in Opelika AL who need a ride around town or into Auburn can now call on Lyft to take them there. The ride-sharing service has obtained a license to operate in Opelika, in addition to its other operations in Alabaster, Birmingham, Huntsville, Auburn, Mobile, Montgomery and Tuscaloosa.

Opelika Mayor Gary Fuller said the city is “very excited” and noted that the service should help improve access to shopping, downtown stores and restaurants. Pam Powers-Smith, president of the Opelika Chamber of Commerce, told the Opelika-Auburn News that Lyft could increase sales for local businesses. Residents who don’t own a car or those that don’t want to drive will now have a dependable way to get around town.

Opelika residents who wish to use Lyft will need to download the service’s mobile app to their cell phone, register with a valid phone number and enter a form of payment. Passengers can then request a ride from a nearby driver. The app will display the driver’s name, a rating from other passengers and a photo of the driver and car.

Lyft will make it easy for residents of neighborhoods like Highway 400 Estates, Stephen Woods, and Cedar Creek to get a ride to local stores like Tiger Town, Angels Antiques and Flea Market or Target.
