How to Know if a Moving Company Gives You a Good Price

It can be extremely difficult to find a good moving company at an affordable rate. Getting a low quote from a company is no guarantee that they will provide good quality service. Not all moving companies use the same price chart, or even offer the same services, so you wind up trying to compare apples to oranges when making a decision on who to hire. However, there are some ways you can compare prices to make your move easier, if you follow these tips from industry experts:

  1. Get a quote from every mover – This seems obvious, but some less reputable moving companies don’t want to provide a quote or estimate before they begin the moving estimate. If a company won’t provide that information, call the next company. A reputable mover will ask the size of your household, the number of items you need to move, and whether you have any special furniture or fragile items to be moved. Also, be sure to ask if the company will be doing the move themselves, or if they will sub-contract the job out to someone else. If so, get a quote from a different company. Once you have a list of quotes from different movers in your area, you can compare their services to see which one has the best deal at the lowest cost.
  1. Don’t rely on the cheapest quote – While it may be tempting to choose a mover solely on their low price quote, you should justify whether the price is reasonable. If the quote is much lower than the average price you’ve found elsewhere, that is a red flag which suggests the company is not to be trusted. On the other side, a high price doesn’t necessarily guarantee the best service. See where those extra costs are coming from, and don’t be afraid to call and ask questions if you don’t understand something.
  1. Check the company’s policy on how they price a move – In order to evaluate a moving company effectively, it’s important to know the details about their pricing policy. Find out if they charge extra for conditions in your new home that might complicate the move, such as stairs or if insurance is included in the price. Also, find out if the estimate they give you will be binding, or even better, a binding not-to-exceed estimate. These types of estimates put a guaranteed cap on what you will pay for your move so you don’t get surprised with a much larger-than-expected bill after the move is complete.
  1. Review multiple companies – Get quotes from at least three different moving companies before making any decision. If you’re still having trouble deciding, ask for recommendations from family and friends, or search online sites like Yelp for reviews. Finally, call the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Association’s (FMCSA) Safety Violation and Consumer Complaints hotline at 888-368-7238 (open 24/7) to see if there have been any complaints against your top prospect, so you can feel confident about your selection.
