How to Use Color to Sell Your Home
March 9, 2019
Buyers love new homes in Columbus GA because they offer a chance to decorate a home from scratch. But what about houses that have been around for years? They often express the personalities of their previous owners–maybe a little too much. You may love your purple bedroom, but when it’s time to sell your house, it’s time to change your colors.
Start with the outside.
This is where your home makes its first impression on potential buyers. The more your home’s colors fit in with the surrounding neighborhood, the greater its chances of appealing to more buyers. Go with neutral colors like white, beige or light gray for the broadest appeal. However, pay attention to the local styles. Colors that suit a San Francisco Victorian would be out of place in a Connecticut neighborhood of sedate Colonial homes. When in doubt, remember that a white house sells well in most areas. Whatever you choose, have a professional paint job or touch up any areas that need it.
Repaint the interior.
If the interior of your home hasn’t been painted in several years, chances are it could use a fresh coat. Again, stick with neutral colors. There’s no need to follow trends here. Use white, off-white, light beige or light gray with white trim. Very few people will object to these colors. If they find them boring, they can repaint as they wish after they purchase the house. Most people with strong tastes don’t mind painting a bold color over neutrals, but it’s harder to convince people with more subdued tastes to buy a house filled with dramatic colors.
Consult professionals.
When in doubt, seek the advice of an experienced real estate agent in your area. They’ll know what colors help sell homes in your location. If your painting skills are rusty or you lack time, consider hiring a professional painter. Besides improving the colors in your home, having a fresh paint job makes your house feel clean, fresh and well maintained–all qualities that will appeal to buyers.
