How to Use Color to Sell Your Home

April 22, 2019

Color is one of the most important design elements in Smiths Station AL homes. When it comes time to sell your home, it makes sense to use colors that will appeal to the greatest number of potential buyers.

In general, that means using neutral colors that won’t turn people off. On the outside of your house, white, tan or greige are almost always safe bets. It’s also important to make sure the exterior color of your home fits into the neighborhood. This isn’t the time to make a bold color statement unless that’s the norm in your neighborhood. Use hues that complement or match the other homes in the immediate area.

Whatever color the outside of your home is, make sure it’s clean and professionally painted. If your home can’t be painted, have it pressure washed so it’s sparkling clean. You want to create the impression of a fresh, well-maintained home. That attention to detail will help you get the highest price when you sell.

The neutral color principle applies indoors as well. Paint the walls in light, calming colors. Be sure to touch up any damaged areas or nail holes before you start. Then apply fresh paint in white, light beige or light gray to create a bright, clean feel. Again, hire a professional if you aren’t a skilled painter.

While neutrals are always a safe bet, some specific colors can actually increase the value of your home. These include soft blues in bathrooms and bedrooms, light beige with white trim in the living room, bluish gray dining rooms and “greige” exteriors. A blue front door can also increase the sales price of your home. Keep in mind that color trends come and go. If you’re reaching for the highest sales price, invest in colors that are trendy at the time you’re selling. Your real estate agent will be able to advise you about which colors help homes sell well in your area.
