Fort Benning Independence Day Celebration
June 18, 2016
One reason people choose to buy homes in Columbus GA is its proximity to Fort Benning. The U.S. Army post is located just south of town, and supports more than 120,000 active-duty military and their families, along with members of the Reserve, retirees and civilian employees. Fort Benning is also a major employer for Columbus residents, and each year, hosts an Independence Day Celebration that is free and open to the public.
The event has traditionally been held the last Saturday in June so military personnel can travel over the holiday to be with family and friends. This year, the celebration is being expanded to a two-day event at Fort Benning.
The Fort Benning Independence Day Celebration starts on Friday, June 24th with a carnival on Gardner Field and continues on Saturday with Fort Benning’s traditional celebration on York Field. There will be at least 20 rides for adults and children, including traditional favorites like the Himalaya, Flying Dutchman, Bumper Cars, giant slide, Scat, Tornado, Ring of Fire and more.
This family-friendly event features concerts, shows, games, rides, bounce houses, and great food. There will also be a demonstration by the Silver Wings Parachute team and a “Fries & Spies” Ranger tactical operations demonstration. Plus, attendees, including kids, will get a chance to jump from a 34’ airborne training tower. However, the cadre will determine whether a child is tall enough or heavy enough to jump from the tower. The highlight of the Independence Day Celebration is the largest fireworks show in the Chattahoochee Valley.
