Columbus Residents Enjoy Thrills and Spills at Downtown Whitewater Park
August 31, 2016
How would you like to spend the day paddling your kayak down the Chattahoochee River? If you think you have to drive a couple of hours to find a great spot, think again. When you own one of the new homes in Columbus GA, you can just head downtown to the Waveshaper Whitewater Park.
The city created this park in 2012 by removing two century-old dams and replacing them with a state-of-the-art kayak surf wave just blocks from downtown. The adjustable whitewater park allows river managers to customize the rapid to the needs of paddlers. Head down to the river park today and you’ll see kayakers, riverboarders and surfers testing their skills on the surging waves.
If you don’t feel like testing the waters yourself, you and your family can always set up a picnic along the nearby boulders to observe the action. From there, you’ll frequently see stand up paddle boarders and fishing boats cruising through the flatwater below the rapid. The Waveshaper attracts action after dark too, since floodlights allow paddlers to continue surfing into the warm Georgia night.
Wave enthusiasts say the two-and-a half mile section of Class III rapids that end in the Waveshaper can accommodate every skill level, and it’s a great learning spot. The Cut Bait channel features Class IV rapids that end in a hole aptly named Bar Fight. It’s perfect for more adventurous kayakers, but it’s still relatively safe as it empties into a deep, slow-moving section of the Chattahoochee River.
The area around the whitewater park features several restaurants such as 11th and Bay Southern Table, which features a unique take on a popular Southern appetizer: chicken and sweet potato waffles; and the Black Cow, where you can grab a brew, burger or even deep-fried bacon. Columbus also hosts free outdoor music, food truck festivals or other family-friendly events just about every week of the year.
